Real-time wind velocity in knots and mph, afternoon Washoe Zephyr thermal forecast, high-altitude sail trim aerodynamics at 6,225 ft MSL, verified yacht club regattas, and USGS surface water telemetry for Lake Tahoe (California).
Lake Wind Advisory issued October 8 at 11:45AM PDT until October 10 at 11:00PM PDT by NWS Reno NV
Peak Gusts: 7 kts (8 mph). Gentle breeze; smooth gliding conditions across the water.
Aerodynamic Factor: At 6,225 ft MSL, thinner air exerts reduced dynamic pressure on sails. Rig with fuller draft/camber to generate equivalent lift.
Cold Shock Hazard: Water temperature is below 60°F. Immediate cold shock risk upon capsize. USCG-approved PFDs or wetsuits essential.
Advisory Threshold: Official Lake Wind Advisories trigger when sustained winds reach 15 mph (13 kts) or wave chop exceeds 3 ft.
Current index calculated from verified local atmospheric, hydrographic & alert inputs.
Very Poor / Avoid for sailing (30/100), from 4 available inputs. Supporting this: Gusts exceed sustained wind by 7 mph, making the breeze puffy. 0% chance of precipitation. Working against it: Wind 0 mph is light; expect limited sailing. Active moderate alert: Lake Wind Advisory. Lake Wind Advisory is in effect for this lake. Sailing scores are capped at 30. Not available from a verified source for this lake: visibility. Confidence is high (88%).

Surface chop and thermal breezes expand with sustained wind duration across Lake Tahoe's open water fetch. Morning hours typically offer the gentlest air before diurnal solar heating activates afternoon thermal winds.

The Washoe Zephyr is Lake Tahoe’s famous daily thermal afternoon wind. Solar heating of the Nevada Great Basin creates an intense thermal low that pulls cool Pacific marine air over the Sierra Nevada crest. Typically calm in the morning (<6 knots), winds build reliably around 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, generating 14 to 24 knot southwesterly to westerly breezes and 2 to 4 foot steep chop before dissipating rapidly near sunset.
At 6,225 feet (1,897 meters) above sea level, atmospheric pressure is roughly 18% to 20% lower than at sea level. Because aerodynamic dynamic pressure depends directly on air density, a 15-knot breeze on Tahoe generates noticeably less sail power than a 15-knot ocean wind. Sailors compensate by carrying more sail area, rigging with fuller sail camber/draft, and setting larger headsails (e.g. 150% Genoas).
The two primary sailing institutions are the Tahoe Yacht Club (TYC, founded 1925 in Tahoe City) and the South Lake Tahoe Windjammers Yacht Club (WJYC in Tahoe Keys). Flagship regattas include the Trans-Tahoe Regatta (one of the oldest high-altitude regattas in the U.S., hosted by TYC since 1963), the Round-the-Lake Regatta (WJYC), weekly Wednesday Night Beer Can keelboat series, and Monday Laser fleet one-design racing.
Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is the premier beach launch for multihulls and high-performance dinghies due to its sandy shoreline and direct exposure to the Washoe Zephyr. Small monohull dinghies frequently launch from Lake Forest Boat Ramp / Tahoe City and the Tahoe Keys Marina channel on the South Shore.
Under U.S. Coast Guard Inland Navigation Rules, power-driven vessels are legally required to give way to sailing vessels propelled by sail alone. However, sailboats must yield when actively overtaking a powerboat or operating within narrow marked channels. Between two sailboats, the vessel on port tack gives way to the vessel on starboard tack, and the windward vessel gives way to the leeward vessel.
Yes. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) mandates that all trailered watercraft—including keelboats, dinghies, and catamarans—must be inspected and certified clean, drained, and dry before entering the lake to prevent the introduction of quagga/zebra mussels and New Zealand mud snails.
